The Verlo family is a volcan of energy, emotions, and small everyday explosions. At first glance, everything seems to revolve around Sophia, a woman who could easily be described as the definition of a boss queen. She is bold, decisive, and carries the kind of confidence that makes people naturally step aside and make room for her. To many people’s surprise, however, Sophia deeply values her time alone. She needs moments when nobody wants anything from her, nobody asks questions, and nobody expects her to settle yet another family civil war at the kitchen table. Luckily, she has Anthony by her side, a husband who not only knows exactly when his unstoppable wife needs a break from people and responsibilities, but can also, at least most of the time, mediate the constant arguments between their sons. And that is no easy task. In the Verlo household, peace is usually a temporary state, most often found somewhere between one “he started it!” and another “no, I didn’t!” When Sophia and Anthony successfully, and with barely hidden relief, send the boys off for a sleepover at friends’ houses or to an enriching summer camp, a rare kind of silence settles over the house. The kind that feels suspicious for the first five minutes. Only then can Anthony finally sit down at his beloved piano and return to composing. No shouting from the other room, no sound of someone racing up and down the stairs, and no need to decide whose turn it was to pick the movie. Dylan, the older of the two sons, was genuinely excited about having a younger sibling at first. Truly. He imagined that little Nathan would one day play board games with him, kick a ball around, and search the forest for hidden treasures. In his mind, it sounded like the beginning of the perfect brotherly team. Over time, however, it became clear that Nathan had a slightly different vision for their relationship. Yes, he likes his older brother. Very much. He just happens to enjoy getting under his skin just as much. The worst part for Dylan is that Nathan does it with remarkable precision. He is wickedly clever, quick to spot weaknesses, and almost always able to look so innocent that it seems impossible he had anything to do with the chaos unfolding around him. His little cherub face definitely does not help Dylan explain to their parents that this time, he really did not start it. Nathan is gifted, sharp, and unsettlingly effective when he wants something. Does he secretly aspire to take over the world? Possibly. Is he already working on the first stage of the plan? Probably. Will the Verlo family notice before it is too late? Well. Dylan says he tried to warn them.
