Maria became a mother very young. Her son, little Alfio, was her whole world from the very beginning, even if the rest of the world was not exactly eager to make things easier for her. Maria’s parents first refused to accept her relationship, and later her pregnancy, which, in their eyes, happened far too soon and with entirely the wrong man. Alfio’s father had the charm of a romantic lead, but also a talent for the classic magic trick called “now you see me, now you don’t.” Unfortunately, the final act ended firmly on “you don’t.” Despite several attempts, he could not be found, leaving Maria with a responsibility she should never have had to carry alone. The elders of the Trovato family decided the matter had to be dealt with quickly and firmly. In their eyes, Maria had become a stain on the family’s honor, someone easier to push aside than to support. What they did not expect was that their beloved son, Vincent, had no intention of staying in a home that had turned its back on his sister. Vincent is a shy, sweet teenager, but beneath that softness is a strong sense of justice. Since childhood, he had seen the difference in how he and Maria were treated. He saw how much was forgiven in him, and how much was demanded of her. He saw how easily the family explained away his mistakes, and how harshly they judged every step his sister took. She was his sister. And she deserved love, respect, and a real chance at a peaceful life. So when Maria had to leave, Vincent left with her. Not out of rebellion for rebellion’s sake, but out of loyalty. Out of love.
