Pam is a beer-loving bus driver. Most of her story revolves around her regrets, her struggles with alcoholism, and her deep yet complicated, love for her daughter, Penny. Despite her rough exterior, she works hard. She is a single mother living in a run-down trailer. She sleeps on the couch to allow Penny the only bedroom. She battles a severe drinking problem. She harbors a lot of shame about her best but is immensely proud of how smart and capable her daughter is. Penny is a tutor known for her sweet, nurturing nature. She is a elementary school teacher and her deepest life ambition is to escape poverty and start her own family. Penny is introverted and deeply values books and education, which she uses as a quiet escape from her turbulent home life.
